What is a fixed louver vent versus a operable louver vent?
These are fixed louver vents.
Operable louvers will open and close on hinges as heat escapes like a dryer vent.
One advantage of a fixed louver vent is the slats will never move and there are no hinge pins to loosen or bend and cause the slats to stop operating or fall out.
What is a front flange vent? Why do some vents have nail fins?
Usually a nil fin is located on the face of the vent to fasten it to the wall.
We offer all 4 flange locations and even custom sizing.
This front flange vent has a 1 1/2 inch nail fin surrounding the face of the vent appearing as trim so once it is installed, there is no extra trim needed.
This flange also covers and hides the imperfections in the cut opening for a finished look and excellent water protection.
The nail fin may be used in a lot of cases as the fastening point but as a triple wall vent, the fasteners can be hidden behind the slats through the vent wall leaving the face flange as a finish trim.
What is the difference in tip to tip and opening size of a custom louver vent?
When ordering, the vent size is the only measure used.
The flange is an add on so it is not measured.
Tip to tip measures mean the vent itself, if naked from any flange or nail fin, will be those measures.
This is commonly used if the opening has not yet been cut into the wall.
Opening size will be measured as the entire opening in the wall.
Then, the vent will be sized down by a quarter of an inch per side of the vent.
This 15w x 28h x 5.5d vent was ordered opening size so it now measures 14.5 x 27.5 x 5.5 so it will slide into the opening easily.
This leaves a quarter inch gap on all 4 sides for adjustments.
If the opening isn't perfectly squared or an unseen protrusion blocking the opening as well as allowing for the wood framing to expand and contract without choking or sqeezing the vent.
Vents should never be too tight in the opening as this can cause excess stress on the vent frame and pop rivet fasteners and shorten the life of the vent.
What is a lock corner?
Along with pop rivets holding the corners together, the metal corners are tabbed and turned to lock them together.
The other option would be to trim these off.
But turning these tabs and locking the corners together makes for a stronger flange as well as stiffening up the vent a little more.
What is the vent depth?
This vent is commonly called a 6 inch deep eventhough it is physically 5 1/2 inches deep.
This common 6 inch deep is from the same framing language as a 2 x 6 wall.
The actual board size of a 2 x 6 is 1 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches.
Thus the common 6 inch vent name refers to a vent that is 5 1/2 inches deep.
From this angle, the deeper depth really shows.

Rectangular custom louver vents
What is a box end vent or a box base vent?
Box end means the bottom of the vent is squared off like the sides and top.
These are used for wall inserts.
The squared bottom allows the vent to be set into place without sliding back out.
Angle base is used on roofs.
Roof vents sitting on the roof angle should have an angle matching the roof pitch.
Using a roof vent in a wall, the angled base will be difficult with the weight of the vent having nothing to brace it from sliding out during install or worse, falling out.
This is why having the correct custom louver vent is very important to ease and speed up the install process.
What holds the corner of the aluminum vent together?
Again, instead of trimming the excess metal length, it is bent and turned over and pressed to lock the metal corners together.
Small attention to detail type actions can prolong the vent life tremendously and the appearance will look just as good as the day it was delivered.
What bug screen is the best?
The suggested screening for evicting bugs from an attic is the aluminum screen.
Fiberglass or vinyl screen actually can be chewed through by wasps, hornets, grasshoppers, etc.
Aluminum is a more permanent solution.
Depending upon the weather conditions of the home's area, the aluminum screen has the capability of lasting 20 to 50 years.
Vinyl and fiberglass usually is beaten up by wind and eaten by insects within 5 to 10 years.
One last note about vent screening...
If the home is in a high dust area, the screen may need cleaned annually.
This can be accomplished by using a shop vac to suck the dust from the holes in the screen.
Do not wet the screen as this will cause the dust to cling worse.
