Measuring is easier than most think.

Why not order by the vent pitch? Because if the framer was off the line when cutting the rafters, the entire roof line will not be an 8/12 pitch, but rather an 8.2 pitch or a 7.8 pitch. Just a fraction on a rafter cut with a saw can change the measure of the vent by several inches.

How to Measure

"Opening size" just means the measures were of the hole in the wall. For this, we will reduce your measures 1/4 inch dimensionally to ensure a good fit. Do not deduct measures yourself. They will not be accurate.

"Tip to tip" is if the vent size itself is to be the measures ordered with no reductions.

A "boxed base" is squared and boxed for a wall install.

The "roof pitch angle base" is in reference to the vent sitting directly onto the roof metal or shingles. For this, type the pitch into the comments box and we will pre-set the base at that angle.

Vent Depth

The depth of the vent is as shown in the changing pictures. So, just how thick the vent will be or how far it will protrude into the gable wall.

Working with a common 4 inch deep vent gives a choice of where the flange will be located.

This J channel was not set on the face or the back.

There is a full 3 1/2" of vent wall to work with.

This gives almost no air restriction.

The face of the vent is trimmed neatly with an inch border.

Then the J channel is added and recessed adding another inch of trim.

The J channel trim face will cover the siding edges.

Replacing a rectangle vent or an attic window with a vent is easy.

The window panes were removed to reveal a 28 x 20 inch opening.

This opening was already trimmed out with brick mold.
